CITY OF LONDON KENTUCKY TREE BOARD

MEETING ON MONDAY, JULY 24, 2017 AT THE LAUREL COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE FROM 7 PM -9 PM 

THE FOLLOWING IS A REPORT.

I.    OVERVIEW OF TRAINING CONDUCTED ON APRIL 6 & 7TH OF 2017 BY DR. WILLIAM FOUNTAIN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND ENVIRONMENT.

    A.  "COMING TOGETHER IS A BEGINNING, KEEPING TOGETHER IS PROGRESS, WORKING TOGETHER IS SUCCESS" ---HENRY FORD

         1.  1.  WHEN A CITY COUNCIL, ADVISORY COMMITTEE, TREE BOARD, LANDLORD, TRAINED PROFESSIONALS, AND VOLUNTEERS COME TOGETHER, KEEP TOGETHER, AND WORK TOGETHER GREAT THINGS HAPPEN.

         2.  THE TRAINING AND REVIEWING AS A TREE BOARD IS FOCUSED ON RAISING THE STANDARD OF FUNCTION OF THE TREE BOARD.

    B.  ROLE OF THE TREE BOARD IN THE COMMUNITY.

        1.  EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE URBAN FOREST AND IT'S IMPORTANCE TO THE COMMUNITY.  ADVISING.  POLICY FORMATION SUCH AS EMERALD ASH BORER PLAN, AND OTHER PESTS REQUIRING COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT.

        2.  EDUCATE FOR HIGH STANDARDS OF CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF URBAN FOREST (PUBLIC TREES)

            a.  TREE CITY USA IS ANAWARD FOR A CITY WHO HAS A TREE CARE ORDINANCE, A TREE BOARD OR ADVISORY COMMITTEE , A BUDGET AND EXPENSE PLAN OF AT LEAST $2.00/CAPITA FOR PLANTING, CARE, AND REMOVAL OF PUBLIC TREES, & CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY AND HAS A PROCLAMATION (the most fun and easiest standard to meet).

        3.    ADMINISTRATION OF TREE CITY USA.  (COLLECT INFORMATION FROM CITY DEPARTMENTS AND FORMS).

        4.   WHO SHOULD SERVE ON A TREE BOARD?

            a. LOCAL CITIZENS, TREE CARE PROFESSIONALS, MUNICIPAL STAFF, EXTENSION SERVICE PERSONNEL, MASTER GARDENERS, LANDSCAPERS, GREEN INDUSTRY AND SUSTAINABILITY PROFESSIONALS, AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVES.

       5.   HOW TO HAVE A SUSTAINED PROGRAM.

            a. THIS MEANS HOW TO SURVIVE DURING CHANGES THAT ARE COMMON TO ALL COMMUNITIES:  LEAN BUDGETS, PERIODS OF GROWTH, TIMES OF INDIFFERENCE, OF TREE BOARD MEMBERS, PERSONNEL, AND POLITICAL. 

         b.   EDUCATE TREE BOARD MEMBERS.  STAY CURRENT IN TREE CARE.

      5.   ESTABLISHED TREE PROJECTS AND PLANS THAT ARE:

            a. SHORT TERM

            b. MEDIUM TERM

            c. LONG TERM

            d. UPDATED/CURRENT

III.   ROLE OF THE LANDOWNER IN THE CITY

IV. ARBOR DAY 2017

      A.  PROCLAMATION SIGNED AT CITY COUNCIL BY THE MAYOR.  GIRL SCOUT TROOP 219, BOY SCOUT PACK 828 AND BOY SCOUT TROOP 572 ATTENDED. 

      B.  POSTER CONTEST, CASH PRIZE FOR TOP 3 WINNERS.  ARBOR DAY PLANTING OF 6 PIN OAKS AT THE WELLNESS PARK (3 FOR 2016 AND 3 FOR 2017). 

      C.  TOP 3 WINNERS AND SCHOOL RECOGNIZED AND HONORED AT MAY AWARDS PROGRAM AT THE LAUREL COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION.

V.   ARBOR DAY 2018

       A.  COMMITTEE 0F 3 WILL BE CHOSEN AT AUGUST 14TH MEETING.  WE RECOMMEND THE POSTER CONTEST AGAIN BUT ADD ACTIVITIES TO REACH OUT MORE TO THE COMMUNITY.

VI.   PROGRAM:  JOEY HAMPTON FROM STRAIGHT CUT TREE SERVICES SPOKE ON HOW TO PROTECT TREES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CONSTRUCTION. 

       A.  OLD INDIAN TRAIL TREE AT TREETOP ADVENTURES AT LEVI JACKSON, A WHITE OAK.  REQUIRES A PROTECTIVE FENCE.

VII. LIST RECOMMENDED TREES FOR CITY OF LONDON.  TREE BOARD WILL BE ESTABLISHING ON THIS FALL.

IX. DUSTIN ESTRIDGE A FFA SPONSOR AT NLHS HOSTED THE STATEWIDE TREE COMPLETION FOR HIGH SCHOOLS LAST YEAR.

HE IS INTERESTED IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE TREE BOARD AND DOING SOME VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES.

X.   LONDON DOWNTOWN:  A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE TB ATTENDED THE LUNCH ABOUT LONDON ON JULY 18TH.  JULIE RAE IS CHAIR.  BRITTANY CARDIC IS DIRECTOR.   THEY HAVE RESUMED SELLING MEMORIAL BRICKS AS A PROJECT TO HELP RAISE MONEY.  WE CAN SUPPORT THEM BY UTILIZING THEM TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES, BUSINESSES; HONOR CITIZENS WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED POSITIVELY TO OUR COMMUNITY.

XII. RECOMMENDATIONS TO BE MADE TO LONDON DESIGN COMMITTEE ARE IN THE DEVELOPING STAGE AND WILL BE REVISITED AT THE AUGUST 14TH MEETING.

XIII. ADJOURNED

NEXT MEETING WILL BE MONDAY EVENING AUGUST 14, 2017 AT THE LAUREL COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY AT 5 PM - 7 PM.

PROGRAM WILL BE "VALUE OF TREES TO RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE".  LANDOWNERS AND GENERAL PUBLIC IS INVITED.
